As a white conservative, if I make this statement, "Black folks like fried chicken", I would be accused of racial stereotyping. Of course, I would be generalizing, not all black folks like fried chicken, but liberals would call me a racist for making this statement.
If a black person said, "White folks like fried chicken." No one would accuse the black person of being racist or stereotyping. Liberals would accuse me of being a racist for bringing it up in the first place. I would be told the intent was not racist and to view the comment in context, something that is never offered to conservatives.
Many Kentucky Fried Chicken TV commericals are directly marketed toward blacks. Why ? Because KFC does market research and they see blacks as a customer group that they should target. Proving that in fact, many black folks do like fried chicken. Most people, who are being honest, can see that for what it is. KFC's intent is not racist, it is to sell fried chicken. My intent was not racist either.
Of course, the context of comments and the intent of the person making them is what makes them racist or not. Another important part of this is who is judging the intent of the person. Many liberals earn their livelihood and push their political agenda by judging what is racist or not. It should not come as a surprise then that these liberals are constantly finding racism. Like the old saying, "If you start a witch hunt, you better find a witch". These liberals find their witches.
This brings us to a LA Times' Culture Monster blog post, "Racist image of Michelle Obama based on Versailles painting". This post discusses a caricature of Michelle Obama based on a painting of Marie Antoinette that appeared on a right wing blog. Of course, the liberal author has already decided that all conservatives are racists, so this caricature must be racist. Here are a couple comments from the post;
"A baldly racist depiction of First Lady Michelle Obama that appeared Tuesday on a right-wing website is based on a 1775 portrait of Marie Antoinette."
"The caricature of Obama as a profligate queen relies on the racist stereotype of an "uppity Negro," which emerged among slave masters in an earlier American era."
Here is the caricature compared to the original painting.
The French Queen, Marie Antoinette, was known for her lavish extravagance and for being disconnected from the common people. The First Lady, Michelle Obama, has been criticized by conservatives for her lavish spending on vacations and events and that she has a disconnect from average Americans. The comparison of the two is clear to anyone willing to see it, but if your goal is to find right wing racism, then you only see racism. You can dispute if this caricature is accurate or not, but there is absolutely nothing racist about it.
Caricature of political figures has been around since the beginning of politics and cartoon or art type caricature is a staple of the media. Using the comparison to Marie Antoinette has been around for years, like this one, "Barbara Bush has a "Marie Antoinette" moment". (Due to copyright, I cannot post it.)
Here are some other political caricatures, you can decide just how racist they are.
Former President George Bush as a monkey.
Former First Lady Laura Bush as a chimp.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
All of these caricatures are just fine with the political left. Liberals would say they carry no racist intent. I would agree with them. However, those same liberals say the Michelle Obama as Marie Antoinette caricature is racist. The double standard here should be apparent to any thinking person.
The baseless charges of right wing racism extend beyond just caricatures. Any political attack on President Obama is now framed by the liberal media as having some racist motivation behind it. Here, the chief of NY Times' editorial board, Andrew Rosenthal adds to this liberal mythology on his blog "The Loyal Opposition" with, "Nobody likes to talk about it, but its there". He writes;
"There has been a racist undertone to many of the Republican attacks leveled against President Obama for the last three years, and in this dawning presidential campaign. You can detect this undertone in the level of disrespect for this president that would be unthinkable were he not an African-American."
I would argue that Rosenthal is knowingly making the disingenuous charge of racism for simple political gain. He seems to have forgotten the level of disrespect shown by liberals to President Bush, from saying he was responsible for the murder of thousands of Americans on 9/11 to accusing him of lying to the public about the reasons for taking this nation to war. How many times was President Bush hung by a noose or burned in effigy during left wing anti war protests ?
Rosenthal lists a few, very weak, examples of his detected race based disrespect, let us examine one of those. From Rosenthal's list;
"House Speaker John Boehner rejecting Mr. Obama’s request to speak to a joint session of Congress—the first such denial in the history of our republic."
Speaker Boehner asked the President to delay his speech for one day, because the President thought it would be cute to have his speech conflict with the long scheduled first Republican presidential candidates' debate. It was a political stunt designed by the President, because he knew the Republicans would object and so liberals like Rosenthal would write exactly what they did.
As for the assertion that this is the first such denial in the history of this republic, this was the first time in history a President has called for a joint session of Congress to give a partisan campaign speech. He was asked to postpone this campaign speech for 24 hours, not denied.
Some may disagree with my reasoning why President Obama asked to give his speech on that particular date, that is fine. This is from a recent LA Times' article, "Daley resigns as White House chief of staff";
"Daley called Boehner and requested a date for Obama to present his jobs proposal to a joint session of Congress. Daley believed that Boehner had agreed, and a White House aide announced the speech."
"Boehner subsequently said he had never agreed to that date. Obama accepted a different date, giving the appearance he had capitulated to the House speaker. The episode proved an embarrassment to the president."
Hardly the racist conspiracy Mr. Rosenthal has dreamed up. But this is not just a fantasy for Mr. Rosenthal, he and other liberals know full well what they are doing and why. For liberals, the charge of racism has become a political tool.
It is very easy to throw a racist firebomb. Then it is left up to the one who has been covered in the burning gasoline charge of racism to put the fire out. But the damage has already been done and the bomb thrower walks away unhurt. It has become far too easy for liberals to throw these firebombs, they do it because they know they can without any penalty.
One of the most disgusting things is that the constant barrage of false racism charges by the liberal media detracts from honest instances of racism. Instances that should be pointed out for all to see how ugly and real they are. It is like the children's story, "The boy who cried wolf ". After falsely crying wolf many times for attention, no one listened when a wolf really came.
But the President, and the Democrat party, need these invented charges of racism to engage in their class warfare strategy and their advocates in the liberal media are more than willing to oblige. Instead of trying to bring folks together under one common banner, the President wants to divide people, to pit them against each other, on ethnic, economic and racial lines.
The real shame here is because the left cannot win the ideological debate on it's merits, they have reduced themselves to this.While it may bring liberals the short term political gains they seek, the long term damage it does to our nation cannot be measured.
To achieve Dr. Martin Luther King's dream of a day when a person is judged by the content of his character and not by the color of his skin, liberals must stop dividing folks and pitting them against each other because of their race or ethnicity. It makes one ask, who really are the bigots here ?
