Driving around Wauwatosa.

By D.C.

As we often do,on Sunday,my husband and I visited his elderly mother, who lives on the northwest side of Milwaukee. After we enjoyed a nice lunch, the Packers' game and my husband fixed a broken light switch,we headed back home to Oak Creek.

We decided that we had some time to do a little Sunday driving,so instead of taking the freeway we drove home through the city on surface streets, just to see the "sights".Some of the things I saw in Wauwatosa I found interesting.

I saw a woman riding a bicycle down the street. You know the type, all dressed up in tights acting like they are training for the Tour de France. She's riding along with one hand on the handlebars and in her other hand was a cell phone.Yes,she was texting, holding the phone where she could one hand text with her thumb.

This woman was looking straight down at the phone and not looking at all at the road.I watched her do this for several 100 feet and we actually passed her twice, because we had to stop at a four way stop sign.A stop sign the cyclist didn't bother to obey.

I'll let you decide how dangerous of an activity this woman was engaged in.

As we stopped at a stop light,I noticed a young man sitting on the stoop of a closed business. He looked to be a clean cut young man but he was wearing one of those hippie ponchos that are so popular with the pot head crowd.

Of all things, this goofball was actually playing a bongo drum that he was holding between his knees.I didn't roll down the window to see if I could smell pot smoke, but I have my suspicions.I guess he was the one man "Occupy 'Tosa" protest.

It's a free country, man. When Conservatives call it a free country,we are talking about freedom, this young man's idea of a free country is probably one in which he gets free stuff.

We saw several hooptie cars, and a few nicer ones, that basically had the rear bumper glued on with lefty bumper stickers.I think in some cases the stickers also held the trunk lid closed. My husband has the ability to read these bumper stickers and determine the age of the driver.

They fall into two catergories, old lefties and young lefties. An example being, old lefties will have PEACE stickers, while the younger ones will have COEXIST.Also, old lefties have more environmental stuff where the young ones not so much. The young ones have more of the pot head type stickers.Of course, the music group stickers also date them.If you see anything Grateful Dead,it's probably some old coot.Though the faded out Obama '08 stickers offer no clue as to age because they all have at least one.

Considering there are so many of them on the road, guessing their age is a fun game to play while driving around the city. It's also a lot less painful than "punch bug".

I noticed many homes with "Recall Walker" yard signs,at least a dozen.I also noticed many homes, too many to count, had flag poles in their yards with an American flag and a Packers or Brewers(or both) flags on them. This caused me to notice a continuing theme, none of the homes with the flags had the "Recall Walker" signs and likewise, none of the homes with "Recall Walker" signs had American flags.

It was around this time that we decided that we had seen enough of the "sights" and jumped on the freeway to quickly get home to the relative normalcy of Oak Creek.

I am offering no judgement on Wauwatosa, you can see this stuff anywhere (just take a drive around the east side of Milwaukee and you can see this stuff times a 1000),I am just reporting on some of the things I saw.
