I found this Slate article very interesting,"A 1979 first grade readiness checklist asks if your child can travel alone in the neighborhood, but not if she can read." It discusses how far in the 1970's parents allowed their children to go away from home vs. how far parents do now.The article has a link to another interesting site on this same subject.
I hate to date myself, but I was around first grade age in the late 70's and this story made me think of how my parents let us kids run all over.
The article is interesting food for thought for parents of young kids.
