You can call me a "Square".

By D.C.

I went to the grocery store this morning to pick up a few items,14 items to be specific.I counted them because I wanted to use the "express",15 items or less, check out line.

The express line was a few folks deep and I got behind a fortyish man who, while very nicely dressed, badly needed a hair cut.I noticed this fellow had a lot more than 15 items. As the cashier rang up his items,I counted all 37 of them.

Of course,I didn't say anything, but it really bothers me when people do this.Just call it a pet peeve. You know, following the rules, having respect for the way someone chooses to operate their private business, dorky, nerdy, square things like that.

So this "fine gentleman" asked the cashier if he could write a check for $25 over and get the cash back.(Who still writes checks these days?) She told him yes.As he is writing the check,he starts saying something about another grocery store chain and the fact that they will not let you get cash back in this way.He is not really speaking to any person in particular,he is just talking out loud for anyone who bothered to listen.

While I can't quote him exactly,he goes on to say the service at that grocery store chain is poor because "they" laid off workers.I begin to see where he is going with this.I can tell by the tone of his voice.

He then says the working man gets stiffed while the "fat cats" walk away with all the money.I'm thinking to myself,"These people never give up,this is a freakin' grocery store not the Capitol building!"

He ends with this,I can directly quote him here because this line burned a mark on my brain,"This is the Republican America we live in now." The cashier handed the man his change and said nothing. He looked at me,as if to see if I agreed with what he said.I avoided making eye contact in hopes he would just go away.Which, thankfully,he did.

I thought about asking him if he knew what party the President belonged to,but of course,I didn't say anything.
